This should come as a shock to no one who has met me: I’m obsessed with Bollywood.
Woven deeply into the culture fabric of India, Bollywood is a form of religion and completely inescapable. Above all else, Bollywood is in the business of hope.
It delivers that hope through grand emotional storytelling, underdog redemption arcs, and vibrant musical escapes that celebrate the triumph of good over adversity. Crucially, these stories don’t deny life’s struggles; they illuminate how ordinary people overcome them. Watch any classic Bollywood film and you’ll see poverty, hardship, and systems rigged against the protagonist.
But it always returns to the same core truth: the hero wins not because the system suddenly became fair, but because they made an internal choice to act like a different future would work out for them. Hope isn’t denial; it’s the decision to see what’s possible instead of what’s obvious.
In the 2001 film Lagaan, a village of impoverished, heavily taxed farmers in colonial India is challenged by their British rulers to a cricket match – a game they had never seen. Win, and their crippling taxes are canceled. Lose, and they face total ruin. They are completely outmatched in resources, training, and power.
The Underdog Reality for Credit Unions
Today, Wall Street attempts to set the rules of engagement, expecting community institutions to fade under the weight of digital transformation.
The pressure points are real across the industry. Young members are choosing digital-first banks and fintechs such as Robinhood over traditional branches, with 30% of Gen Z unaware credit unions even exist. At the same time, a steep velocity disparity exists: fintechs ship features quarterly while credit union core systems age and roadmaps span years. This creates heightened urgency to list new member growth as a top priority today.
The Currency of Hope
This is where Lagaan offers a masterclass in strategy.
The hero, Bhuvan, doesn’t try to out-spend or out-resource the imperial rulers. Instead, he uses hope to rally a fragmented community, changing the game by leveraging local insights no outsider could match.
For credit unions, AI is your Bhuvan moment.
AI isn’t meant to make you look like a mega-bank; it’s the equalizer that removes operational friction so your team can focus on your true advantage: unmatched human connection.
You know your members. You know which families have trusted you for decades and which neighborhoods big banks abandoned. For years, scaling that personal touch against massive digital platforms felt impossible. They were faster at technology; you were better at relationships.
Deploying AI changes that equation. AI handles repetitive inquiries and operates 24/7 so your team can focus on what no machine can replicate: context, empathy, and trust. For the first time, you can pair deep relational roots with world-class technology.
Changing the Game
Capitalizing on this moment requires the same hope Bhuvan possessed: the willingness to believe in a path forward before the outcome is guaranteed.
Hope without execution is just sentiment. Execution without hope is just grinding. Bhuvan teaches us the combination: believe the future is yours to shape, and then go shape it. Deploy the tools, train your teams, listen to young members, and move with agility.
The giants have capital and fintechs have speed, but you have something far harder to copy: genuine community trust. Now, you finally have the technology to amplify it. Lead with that hope.
